1949年，飽受戰爭重創的意大利城市那不勒斯，孤兒卡明和塞萊斯蒂娜相依為命。登上一艘海軍艦艇，兩個孩子橫跨大西洋，前往紐約尋找塞萊斯蒂娜失散已久的姐姐。但是來到陌生的國度，手中的地址沒能指引親人的方向，一場新的冒險又揭開帷幕。本片以費裏尼塵封的劇本為底稿，卻弱化了“費裏尼式”的躁動和怪誕，取而代之的是溫馨質樸，仿佛一出傳統的意大利三幕歌劇。導演借由兩個意大利孩子的眼睛，用新現實主義筆觸浸泡童話濾鏡，在戰後的創傷褶皺中打撈希望的光塵，引領觀眾穿梭回七十多年前，置身於滿是瓦礫的那不勒斯、小世界般的越洋航船和充滿了新世界氣息的紐約。
